Parisian interiors always seem to exude sophistication and glamour, yet they feel like an effortless progression and are never over styled. How do you create a très chic interior that’s both elegant and nonchalant? Follow these simple tips to create your own Parisian masterpiece.
Start by lightening up your walls; a subdued palette highlights gorgeous architectural details and draws the attention to great furnishings or accents. Warm, creamy whites are a great start. If that’s a little too quiet or subdued for you, go for a chalky green, warm linen, or soft grey. Add colour with great art or accessories.
One of my favourite things about French interiors is the architectural details: panelling, cornice and plaster mouldings, and soaring ceilings. More contemporary homes tend not to have these same features, but you can easily build up trim details with things like backband added to window and door casings.
Instead of covering up or hiding these gorgeous elements, show them off and let them be your artwork!
You’ll notice that the more minimal style includes showing off beautiful herringbone floors.
Embrace the concept of negative space and the wisdom of Coco Chanel: less is more. Skip gallery walls and tons of stuff. Art and mirrors, when used, tend to be large statement pieces.
That same notion of space extends to your furniture. Give it room to breathe.
Mix antiques with newer pieces to create a sense of history and storytelling within the room.
Add a touch of gold to amp up the glam factor.
Dramatic floor-length draperies and simple floral arrangements add the perfect finishing touch.
