shipping container pools and cabanas

Given that the sun is shining, the humidity is rising, and there are long weekends approaching both here in Canada and in the U.S., I feel compelled to stick with both outdoor spaces and shipping containers.

What better accessory for a hot, humid weekend but a pool? While you can dig and do the regular pool thing, opting for a shipping container cum pool is a much faster process. You can easily beautify it, or keep it edgy and raw for something more industrial chic.

Yes, there are certain size limitations with a shipping container that do not exist with a custom-built pool. However, you can certainly take inspiration from the above photo that features multiple pools at varying heights. Absolutely perfect if you have one or more people who want to do laps and kids or pets that prefer to splash around.

Once you’ve got your pool taken care of, it’s time to think cabana or shaded lounge area.

The minimalistic hideaway was made for Lieutenant Colonel Chandimal Peiris, and was built by soldiers under the architect’s direction. No skilled labourers were used at all.

How fantastic is this cabana, designed by architect Damith Premathilake at Maduru Oya in Sri Lanka? (Photograph by Logan MacDougall Pope for Inhabitat.)

Happy summer!
